The Nigerian Radiographers/Imaging Scientist Petition Against Medical Doctor Obnoxious Bill

The Nigerian Radiographers/Imaging scientists have reacted to one of OBNOXIOUS BILL - National council of Radiology and Radiation Medicine" sponsored by one Hon. Dr. Patrick Asadu of Igboeze constituency, Enugu state. This bill is obnoxious as it is meant to enslave and ridicule Medical Radiographers forever.
They said Radiography is a profession, while Radiology is not. Radiology is a specialisation, an arm of medicine. Their regulatory body is Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN.

Radiographers are Registered, Regulated, Controlled and Monitored by Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria, (RRBN). All other subspecialties (with the exception of radiology) as enumerated on the bill are also under the control of RRBN

Radiologists cannot have two regulatory bodies neither can Radiographers. Moreover, one can not put the cart before the horse. Its unimaginable for a specialty to Regulate a profession. A radiologist who refuses to be registered with Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) should do the needful and gets registered with RRBN.

The bill will cause undue *DUPLICATION, AVOIDABLE CLASHES and UNNECESSARY ECONOMIC BURDEN ON OUR LEAN RESOURCES*.

It is a deliberate attempt to usurp the powers of RRBN which is a full fledged government agency.

Should this bill scale through, no doubt, Pathologist will demand for a council to Regulate Medical Lab Scientists; Orthopaedic Surgeons will demand for a council to regulate Physiotherapists; O&G doctors will do same to monitor the Nurses and the trend continues. It is high time we realised those culpably guilty of rubbishing the Nigerian health system out of greed and selfishness.

I also want you to know that just like medicine, Radiography has many specialisations viz: Ultrasonography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy etc. Specialties abound also on other sister professions (Pharmacy, Medical Lab Sciences etc). Sir, this bill will set undue precedence by which all these specialties will strive to set up councils to be financed by the Federal Government with the available little resources that could otherwise be used to strengthen those existing regulatory bodies.

This bill is not and can never be to the interest of the patient who should be central in the thinking process of every medical expert. Should all other health professionals leave the hospital in the hand of doctors under the cloaks and guise of Radiologists, Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) and Pathologists? That's an honest question begging for an answer.http://www.just2ok.com/feeds/posts/default
